How do you end a long-term friendship? Even when you know it's coming -- hell, you know it's overdue -- it's hard to screw up the courage and do it.

I've known this guy for a decade. He knows how to turn on the charm. Unfortunately, he is not a reliable friend. Too many times I've walked away from seeing him and said: "That's it." I just need to make it happen.

I can't say I've ever "broke up" with a friend but I have let some friendships sort of fade away for similar reasons. The way I look at it, I'm really the only one that can keep myself from being stepped on or treated poorly.

I agree, and I allow things to happen that shouldn't happen. I don't do it terribly often, but it happens more than I'd like. (Of course, I'd like it to never happen.)

It's hard to say goodbye, but I'm terrible at the fade. It just feels incomplete to me.
